CrunchGear Drives GM's Autonomous EN-V Concept Vehicle

"We're here at CES in Las Vegas live streaming the show floor; getting our hands on all the super-modern and futuristic cool stuff. Today, GM asked us to come by and check out what they think the future will be like for some people."

 This future has many types of vehicles that fit entirely different lifestyles. That future is of course more than 10 years away, but we'll get there with working concepts like the GM EN-V. And they gave us the keys.

The first thing you notice about the EN-V is that it only has two wheels, just like a Segway—in fact it has Segway's balancing equipment on board, and shares a large portion of technology. Unlike the Segway, the EN-V balances the chassis and coach on a sliding rail-like interface, but still uses leverage to stop and go. It's a tiny 2-seater that takes up about a quarter the space of a normal car—you can see why that would make for great urban mobility. Top speed is 25 mph and range is about 30 miles.

Thinking of the future, it's important to consider the environmental and mobility challenges we'll have and radical change in our commuting may need to occur. The EN-V is a great start; not only as a small and lightweight (900lb) EV, but it's also autonomous. Autonomy will introduce a new take on efficiency and safety; cars will follow much more closely, called platooning, eliminating traffic jams; automated retrieval and auto-parking; and V2V or vehicle-to-vehicle communications.
