Thomas meets Sonia over food price hike. Why doesn't cabinet meet over food price hike?
How come SoniaG has not called upon NAC to deliberate on the issue of food prices?
How come SoniaG has not discussed with PM and other senior cabinet ministers on the issue of food prices?
Will KV Thomas of INC deliver the magic wand as Minister of State with independent charge of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution?
Weird are the ways of working of this Chairperson of NAC and super-PM heading NAC which is a superbody overseeing many aspects of life in India not excluding a policy draft branding Hindus under a draft communal violence bill.

Thomas meets Sonia over food price hike

Zeebiz Bureau
New Delhi: Food Minister KV Thomas today met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to discuss steps to contain the steep hike in the prices of essential food items, besides reviewing progress on the proposed Food Security legislation.
"I apprised her of the proposed Food Bill. I also briefed her about inflation. Sonia Gandhi is concerned about high food inflation. We discussed how to tackle this problem and the areas that the government should give thrust on," Thomas said.
For the week ended October 15th, food inflation breached the double-digit psychological barrier as it rose to a six month high of 11.43 percent owing to a relentless surge in the prices of vegetables, fruits, milk and pulses.
"I told her (Sonia Gandhi) that there was no inflation in food grains and prices were stable. In the case of edible oils, prices have gone up slightly because we import.Besides, prices of milk, meat and vegetables have also gone up largely because of change in the consumption pattern and rise in income," he said.
With Thomas up for a change in the food habits of the consumers, the prices of vegetables got dearer by 25 percent on a year-on-year basis while eggs, meat and fish turned costlier by 12.82 percent as per the WPI (Wholesale Price Index) on food inflation released on Thursday.
On the proposed National Food Security Act, Thomas said he told the UPA Chairperson that the Food Ministry would start finalising the draft bill next week.
"We have received feedback from state governments. There are some changes. We will start preparing the final bill next week," he said.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had asked the state governments to send their comments on the draft bill at the earliest to help the government finalise the bill for introduction in the winter session of Parliament.
The proposed bill aims to provide legal right to subsidised food grains to nearly 70 percent of the country's population.
The fresh bout of double digit inflation along with the earlier hike in the prices of diesel and LPG have put the Congress on a back foot ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
After a drubbing in the Hisar by-poll, the stakes are high for Congress in Uttar Pradesh where prices in the food items have always shaped the electoral mood.

Food inflation likely to remain steady: KV Thomas
Ram Sahgal, ET Bureau Oct 28, 2011, 01.37am IST
MUMBAI: Food prices may not come down substantially from current levels but neither would they shoot up sharply from here, said KV Thomas, minister of state (independent charge) for consumer affairs, food and public distribution.
Thomas' outlook comes close on the heels of Reserve Bank of India raising key policy rates by quarter of a percentage point each to curb demand side inflation and food price inflation having risen to double digits for the first time in a month-and-a-half during the week ended October 8.
"My experience over the past one year is that inflation in 15 essential food items, except for a few pulses and edible oils, has remained steady. Other than these, prices of paddy, wheat and sugar and other items have been stable. This is one of the reasons for my optimism that food prices will stabilise over the next few months," said Thomas.
